try the exhaust between the manifold and the back section that place breaks alot especially if you hammer your car alot.
So, yesterday was a nice clear, crisp morning when I set out to work in the Sol. I stop at the end of the driveway and notice 'fog' coming out from under the car in front of the headlight. My blue Sol is trying to asphixiate me! AAAAAAArrrggghhhhh!!!
Well, I thought I could get the better of a 'dumb machine' and set out last night to find the leak and close it. Taking off the heat shield to inspect the header, I break one of the bolts...just a clean snap across the diameter. Nothing loose and no excessive smoot on the components. I then jack up the front end and crawl under. No visible exhaust buildup around the connections at either end of the cat. Removed the lower heat shield around the converter and everything looks clean. Couldn't remove the top piece because of clearance. Tightened everthing back up and put the car back down. Left the heat shield off the header because I'm lazy and want to know if it was the piece making the rattling noise. I decide that I can shine a flashlight down the underside of the car tomorrow morning when the hot exhaust would be easier to see in the cold morning air.
It was damn foggy this morning! I could barely see the front of the car much less any leaks. The car is still rattling and sounds as loud as ever. That leak must still be there which means my Sol is still trying to kill me!

If you can't find anything loose, such as heat shields on the cat, bolts, hangers, etc. It maybe the b-pipe where the two pipes are joined, it seems that they can rust/rot out and make an annoying rattle that you can't see or find. I had it on mine before I changed the header, now it's gone. I found out about this many years ago on a message board. Just something to think about. Now steam coming out from under there, that maybe something else all together.

No fog this morning so I was able to peek under the car to look for the leak. It seems like the catalyst is the most likely suspect. There seemed to be a constanst supply of visible fumes floating around the connection from the back of the cat to the intermediate pipe that snakes back to the muffler. I couldn't make out where the leak was exactly because the shielding covers up so much of the cat and piping. There seemed to be a bit of surface corrosion on the joint between the cat and intermediate when I last crawled under there. Couldn't get far enough back to really see and work on that part. Is there supposed to be a gasket in the connective joints?

aarrghh!...it's probably easier to unbolt the exhaust from the cat back and pull it out to inspect it than to crawl under and look for the leak.
